About ISHDO

Integrated Services on Health and Development Organization (ISHDO) is a legally registered non-profit civil society organization engaged in implementing development interventions across various sectors, including education.

ISHDO is seeking to recruit a qualified and motivated Project Coordinator to lead the implementation of the SPELL (Structured Pedagogy to Enhance Learning for Life) Program in Deedoo Woreda, Jimma Zone. The position will support effective planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of project activities funded by the Luminos Fund.

 Project Overview 

Structured Pedagogy to Enhance Learning for Life (SPELL) is an evidence-based education intervention model designed to improve foundational literacy outcomes for Grade 1 students in mainstream primary schools in Oromia region. The SPELL model supports effective literacy instruction by providing Grade 1 Literacy teachers with structured daily lesson plans aligned with the curriculum, practice-based professional development training, and ongoing instructional coaching and mentoring. Coaching support is delivered regularly by trained school leaders to strengthen teachers’ pedagogical skills, improve classroom instruction, and ensure the effective implementation of literacy teaching practices. Through this integrated approach, SPELL aims to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, improve students' foundational reading skills, and create sustainable systems of instructional support within schools.

  • Reports To: Luminos Fund (LF) Program Manager at ISHDO
  • Employment Type: Full-Time

Job Purpose

The SPELL Project Coordinator will be responsible for the overall coordination, implementation, monitoring, reporting, and stakeholder engagement of the SPELL Project in Deedoo Woreda of Jimma Zone, Oromia Region. The position will ensure the timely and high-quality delivery of project activities, provide technical and operational support to project stakeholders, strengthen collaboration with education authorities, and contribute to achieving project goals and improved literacy outcomes for children.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

1. Project Planning, Coordination, and Implementation

  • Lead the planning, coordination, and implementation of all project activities in accordance with approved work plans, budgets, project objectives, and donor requirements.

  • Ensure project activities are implemented on schedule, within scope, and according to established quality standards.

  • Develop detailed implementation schedules and coordinate activities across target schools and stakeholders.

  • Monitor project progress and identify implementation challenges, risks, and bottlenecks, proposing practical solutions as needed.

  • Ensure that project targets, milestones, and deliverables are achieved within agreed timelines.

2. Capacity Building and Technical Support

  • Organize and facilitate training, refresher training, and capacity-building activities for teachers, school leaders, cluster supervisors, and education officials.

  • Provide ongoing technical support to ensure fidelity in the implementation of the SPELL model.

  • Support school leaders in effectively delivering instructional coaching and mentoring to teachers.

  • Provide coaching, mentoring, and technical assistance to project supervisors and other key stakeholders to strengthen program quality and learning outcomes.

  • Facilitate experience-sharing and peer-learning opportunities among schools and education stakeholders.

3. Stakeholder Coordination and Partnership Management

  • Establish and maintain strong working relationships with Regional, Zonal, and Woreda Education Offices, schools, communities, and other relevant stakeholders.

  • Promote stakeholder ownership and participation in project implementation and sustainability efforts.

  • Represent ISHDO and the SPELL Project in coordination meetings, review forums, technical working groups, and stakeholder engagement platforms.

  • Coordinate closely with government counterparts to ensure alignment with education priorities and policies.

4. Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning, and Reporting

  • Develop and implement supervision and monitoring plans in line with approved project work plans.

  • Organize and facilitate project performance review meetings and learning events.

  • Conduct regular field monitoring visits and supportive supervision to target schools.

  • Mentor and provide technical support to SPELL supervisors assigned to project schools.

  • Monitor progress against project indicators, targets, and expected outcomes.

  • Collect, verify, compile, analyze, and report project performance data in a timely and accurate manner.

  • Document and share lessons learned, best practices, success stories, and case studies.

  • Prepare high-quality monthly, quarterly, and other periodic reports for ISHDO and the donor.

  • Provide regular implementation updates to the LF Program Manager.

5. Learning Materials and Resource Management

  • Support the planning, procurement, distribution, and utilization of teaching and learning materials required for project implementation.

  • Monitor the availability and proper use of instructional materials across project schools.

  • Ensure project resources are utilized efficiently, effectively, and in accordance with organizational policies.

  • Identify resource gaps and recommend corrective measures when necessary.

6. Compliance and Administrative Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with organizational policies, donor regulations, safeguarding requirements, and project management procedures.

  • Maintain accurate project records, documentation, and filing systems.

  • Support project audits, assessments, evaluations, and donor monitoring visits as required.

  • Uphold safeguarding, child protection, and ethical standards throughout project implementation.

  • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor that contribute to the successful implementation of the project.
