The Specialized Procedure Nurse is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients undergoing diagnostic, therapeutic, and minimally invasive procedures in specialized clinical units. The role involves patient assessment, preparation, assistance during procedures, monitoring and recovery care, patient education, and coordination with multidisciplinary healthcare teams to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality procedural services.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Clinical Duties:
  • Provide direct nursing care to patients undergoing specialized diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
  • Conduct comprehensive pre-procedure assessments, including medical history review, physical assessment, medication reconciliation, allergy screening, and patient preparation.
  • Prepare patients physically and psychologically for procedures by providing appropriate education, counseling, and informed care support.
  • Assist physicians and other healthcare professionals during specialized procedures, ensuring adherence to clinical protocols and patient safety standards.
  • Monitor patients throughout procedures, including assessment of vital signs, cardiac rhythm, oxygen saturation, pain levels, and overall clinical condition.
  • Administer medications, intravenous therapies, sedation support (where authorized), contrast agents, and other prescribed treatments according to established protocols.
  • Provide immediate post-procedure monitoring and recovery care, identifying and responding promptly to complications or adverse events.
  • Perform nursing procedures such as intravenous access management, specimen collection, wound care, catheter care, and dressing changes as required.
  • Ensure strict adherence to infection prevention, aseptic techniques, procedural safety standards, and patient identification protocols.
  • Recognize and respond appropriately to medical emergencies occurring during or after procedures.
  • Facilitate safe patient transfer, discharge, and continuity of care following completion of procedures.
• Administrative Duties:
  • Maintain accurate, complete, and timely patient records, procedural documentation, nursing notes, medication records, and recovery assessments.
  • Collaborate closely with physicians, anesthetists, radiologists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, surgeons, laboratory personnel, and other multidisciplinary healthcare professionals.
  • Coordinate scheduling, patient flow, and procedural readiness to optimize service efficiency.
  • Ensure proper preparation, utilization, maintenance, and functionality of specialized medical equipment and procedural supplies.
  • Monitor inventory levels and support procurement of essential equipment, medications, and consumables required for specialized procedures.
  • Adhere to infection prevention and control protocols, patient safety standards, and hospital policies.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical audits, incident reporting, and patient safety programs.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, accreditation standards, and clinical practice guidelines.
• Educational Duties:
  • Provide comprehensive education to patients and families regarding procedural preparation, expected outcomes, post-procedure care, potential risks, and follow-up requirements.
  • Participate in clinical training, continuing professional development, and competency assessments related to specialized procedural nursing care.
  • Support orientation and mentorship of newly assigned nurses and healthcare personnel within specialized procedure units.
  • Promote evidence-based clinical practices and adherence to current procedural care standards.
  • Stay updated with advancements in procedural nursing, medical technologies, patient safety practices, and healthcare regulations.
