Job Details

The North Western Provincial Health Office, under the US President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) Project through a Cooperative Agreement (CoAg) with the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the positions listed below, to be employed on a ten (10) month contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

Responsibilities or duties

To provide comprehensive Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) services to pregnant and breastfeeding women and their infants in order to eliminate new HIV infections in children and improve maternal health outcomes.

  • Provides HIV testing services and comprehensive pre/post-test counselling to pregnant women and their partners in order to identify HIV status and facilitate appropriate care linkages.
  • Initiates, monitors, and manages antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV-positive pregnant and breastfeeding women in order to achieve viral suppression and prevent mother-to-child transmission.
  • Provides HIV prophylaxis to HIV-exposed infants, conducts HIV testing at appropriate intervals, and manages care for HIV-exposed and infected children in order to prevent new infections and ensure optimal health outcomes.
  • Integrates PMTCT services with antenatal care, delivery services, and postnatal care in order to provide comprehensive maternal and child health services.
  • Maintains accurate patient records, collects program data, and submits timely reports in order to monitor program performance and ensure continuity of care.
  • Provides health education on PMTCT, safe infant feeding practices, family planning, and adherence counselling in order to empower clients to make informed health decisions.

Qualifications or requirements 

  • Full Form 5 / Grade 12 School Certificate or equivalent.
  • Diploma/Degree in Midwifery.
  • Valid registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Zambia (NMCZ).
  • PMTCT training certification.
  • HIV Testing and Counselling certification.
  • Ability to maintain accurate patient records and write reports.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients and families in local languages and English.
  • Strong counselling and interpersonal skills, clinical assessment and decision-making abilities.
  • Computer literacy for data management.
  • Cultural sensitivity and empathy.

Experience needed

  • Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years’ experience in maternal and child health or HIV care services.
