Job Purpose

Our client is a well-established commercial farming enterprise seeking an experienced Farm Manager to lead and oversee its agricultural operations. The role is responsible for the planning, coordination, and execution of all farming activities, including land preparation, planting, crop maintenance, harvesting, and post-harvest handling. The successful candidate will oversee up to 850 hectares of winter wheat, 1,000 hectares of summer crops (including soya beans, sorghum, maize, and cover crops), as well as 35 hectares of coffee, ensuring efficient, productive, and sustainable operations throughout the year. The ideal candidate will have proven hands-on experience managing large-scale wheat production, with a strong understanding of best practices across the crop production cycle, while also demonstrating the versatility to oversee a diverse cropping programme.

Key Responsibilities

Planning and Implementation

  • Develop seasonal cropping plans in consultation with the Managing Director and technical advisors.
  • Coordinate timely land preparation, planting, spraying, irrigation, and harvesting activities.
  • Ensure adequate procurement and application of fertilisers, seeds, pesticides, and other inputs.
  • Supervise and deploy farm labour, including general workers and equipment operators, in accordance with daily operational plans.
  • Ensure clear task allocation, fair work practices, and accurate wage reporting in coordination with HR.
  • Monitor productivity and intervene to address underperformance, absenteeism, or misconduct.
  • Coordinate with the Workshop Manager to ensure all farm equipment and machinery are maintained and serviced regularly.
  • Maintain accurate records of planting schedules, crop performance, input usage, labour deployment, and weather patterns.
  • Submit monthly farm activity reports to the Managing Director, including yield projections and operational challenges.
  • Ensure that all farming practices comply with environmental regulations and internal safety standards.
  • Train staff on safe chemical handling, equipment use, and protective gear.
  • Oversee the harvesting process to maximise yield and minimise losses.
  • Coordinate storage, drying, grading, and transfer of produce for sale, processing, or internal use.
  • Liaise with Logistics and Milling teams regarding raw material needs and timing.

Internal: Managing Director, Workshop Manager, HR Manager, Transport & Logistics Manager

External: Input suppliers, agricultural extension officers, inspection authorities

Labour Management

  • Supervise and deploy farm labour, including general workers and equipment operators, in accordance with daily operational plans.
  • Ensure clear task allocation, fair work practices, and accurate wage reporting in coordination with HR.
  • Monitor productivity and intervene to address underperformance, absenteeism, or misconduct.

Equipment and Resource Management

  • Coordinate with the Workshop Manager to ensure all farm equipment and machinery are maintained and serviced regularly.

Record-Keeping and Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of planting schedules, crop performance, input usage, labour deployment, and weather patterns.
  • Submit monthly farm activity reports to the Managing Director, including yield projections and operational challenges.

Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure that all farming practices comply with environmental regulations and internal safety standards.
  • Train staff on safe chemical handling, equipment use, and protective gear.

Harvest and Post-Harvest Management

  • Oversee the harvesting process to maximise yield and minimise losses.
  • Coordinate storage, drying, grading, and transfer of produce for sale, processing, or internal use.
  • Liaise with Logistics and Milling teams regarding raw material needs and timing

Key Relationships

Internal: Managing Director, Workshop Manager, HR Manager, Transport & Logistics Manager

External: Input suppliers, agricultural extension officers, inspection authorities

Key Performance Incentives

Performance will be measured against agreed Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) directly linked to crop performance, including achievement of targeted yields and quality standards across wheat, maize, soya beans, sorghum and coffee; timely execution of all farming operations; adherence to approved input budgets; efficient use of fertilisers and crop protection products; minimisation of harvest and storage losses; and delivery of overall production outcomes that maximise farm profitability.

Remuneration to Employee:

Net salary of USD 5000 at the prevailing bank of Zambia mid-rate of exchange
