Electrician

Job Purpose

To install, maintain, inspect, troubleshoot and repair electrical equipment and systems in underground mining operations, ensuring maximum equipment availability and compliance with electrical safety standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Install, maintain and repair underground electrical equipment and systems.
• Carry out preventive and corrective electrical maintenance.
• Diagnose electrical faults and undertake repairs.
• Maintain underground power distribution systems.
• Inspect electrical installations and identify potential hazards.
• Conduct testing and isolation of electrical equipment in accordance with approved procedures.
• Maintain electrical equipment, cables, switchgear, motors and related installations.
• Ensure electrical work is conducted in accordance with approved mine procedures.
• Complete maintenance records and report equipment defects.
• Participate in planned maintenance shutdowns.
• Assist with emergency electrical breakdowns.
• Maintain good housekeeping in electrical work areas.
• Comply with Lock-Out/Tag-Out (LOTO) and electrical isolation procedures.
• Participate in toolbox meetings and safety programmes.
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 School Certificate.
• Craft Certificate/Diploma in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Valid electrical trade qualification.
• Relevant professional registration/certification where applicable.
• Minimum 3 years' experience in electrical maintenance, preferably in an underground mining environment.
• Strong knowledge of industrial/underground electrical systems.
• Knowledge of mine electrical safety and isolation procedures.
• Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings.
• Physically fit and able to work underground and on a shift basis.
